Community Drive
As the winter chill settles in, it is a reminder that many families in our communities face the season without the basic necessities for warmth and nutrition. At the Opened Book Institute (OBI), we believe in the power of collective action, and we are reaching out to ask for your support in making a tangible difference.
We are officially launching our Community Drive, and we need your help to ensure that less people go cold or hungry this year.

Our Mission: Outreach to Welbedacht, Durban (in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Community Youth Centre)
We are currently planning a dedicated community outreach day this July in Welbedacht. Our goal is to hand-deliver every donated item directly to the individuals and families who need them most.
This initiative is about more than just supplies; it’s about showing up for our neighbors and providing a safety net during the toughest months of the year.
How You Can Help
We are looking for donations across three critical categories:
- Warmth: Clean, good-quality blankets / linen and clothing of all sizes.
- Sustenance: Non-perishable food items (canned goods, maize meal, rice, pasta, and other pantry staples).
- Support: We are looking for extra hands to help us distribute items on the day. If you are willing to assist, we would love to have you on the team.
Spread the Word
We will be sharing more specific details regarding drop-off points and the final event date soon. In the meantime, please start gathering what you can. Your kindness and generosity are what make these outreach days possible.
Together, we can make this winter a little warmer and brighter for everyone. 👋🏼
